The sun was beaming down on the assembled BRC crowd at the Mary Peters Track for our second ‘Try the Track’ session which doubled up as the next event in our fabled Race Series this week.
It was lovely to see so many turn up to the track, and with plenty of partners, sons, daughters, toddlers joining in there was a real family feel to the evening.
With exclusive access to the track it meant that we had space and time to try different events, beginning with a kids race. It’s safe to say that we have future generations of runners already in place. That Blether guy (gal?) is going to be busy for years to come.
The first semi serious event was the 100 metre sprint and after a few heats, at least one false start (don’t worry Áine, no one noticed…), Salmon blasted over the line to take the sprint honours.
Next up was the mile which was split into two races to accommodate the large numbers. This was the official Race Series event and with the sun firmly in place it was terrific to see the times recorded by members. Those Tuesday night sessions are paying off for sure! . Fabrice was corralling the runners, Brendan on timekeeping duties and those who opted out of the mile event cheered on their club mates.
The results of the mile race are on the race series results page but special shout out to the juniors who also ran in this event – Sarah Mountstephen (6.37), Leo Kelly (7.17) and Aengus (8.02)
Next up was the relay and organisers took pity on the tired, hot runners by reducing the distance to 200metres each instead of a full lap. There was a family feel to some of the teams with many of the kids back on board and it was the Swift family, Robinsons (I do like saying that ?) that anchored the winning relay team. Fair play to Matthew Mellon who rightly put the race first by taking over two of the kids on the home stretch!
All in all this was another successful night for our club and with David Hynes not able to make it, there were no flying batons this year, we settled for flying feet
Many thanks to Fabrice for organising the teams on the night and keeping proceedings going at a good pace, and to the Race Series sub committee in the club who have delivered a cracking series of events so far. Next up in the Race Series is the Giants Trail on the last Friday in July, entries are already open and apparently there is a small bit of food served afterwards, so get entering!
