The Belfast Running Club’s first race of the year kicked off with a squelch and a splash at Stormont Cross Country. As runners eagerly laced up their shoes, little did they know that they were about to embark on a journey through a muddy adventure land, testing both their speed and their laundry skills.
The Ladies’ 3.3 Mile Race
In the ladies’ race, competitors faced the dual challenge of manoeuvring through the mud while maintaining their dignity and speed. Jill Mellon, showcasing her prowess, charged through the sticky terrain to claim victory as the first club runner home, clocking in at a respectable 26 minutes and 48 seconds. Unfortunately, Aine Forester encountered a slippery situation, succumbing to a muscle strain and joining forces with the mud instead of crossing the finish line. We hope she’s on the mend and ready to conquer the next race!Donna Healey, undeterred by the treacherous conditions, powered through to seize the title of the second club runner home, finishing in 29 minutes and 13 seconds.
The Men’s 4.4 Mile Race
As the men’s race commenced, it quickly became apparent that navigating through the mud was not for the faint-hearted. David Hynes emerged as the fearless leader of the pack, demonstrating his strategic prowess by overtaking Fabrice Scoupe on the last lap, securing victory with a time of 30 minutes and 16 seconds. His secret? Perhaps it was his ability to turn mud dodging into an art form or his lucky socks — we may never know!Fabrice Scoupe, though valiant in his efforts, couldn’t quite hold off David’s charge and settled for second place with a time of 30 minutes and 31 seconds. Aidan McPeake and Jonny Porter joined the fray, showcasing their resilience and determination as they powered through to claim third and fourth place respectively, with times of 34 minutes and 36 seconds, and 37 minutes and 36 seconds.
